Dear JR,
I need some relationship advice. I have been with my guy for 4 years- we met right after college. He is a wonderful person and we have both grown together in so many ways. We have discussed marriage and both of us want to take that next step. However, he is looking for a better-paying job and I will be relocating 1,300 miles away in a week for my job (transfer). He has expressed interest in moving to another state too but says he can't and we won't live together until he has my ring.
Would you stick around? Hope he gets a better job in that state? How would you try to keep the rlshp together long distance.
Thanks in advance.
A relationship takes two people. You both would need to work at it. You have an opportunity and you are taking it. He is looking for a better opportunity and that may be found with relocating. He claims he may be willing to relocate, you need to really discuss this. YOU ARE leaving to improve yourself. How much is this relationship worth to each of you? Is it worth working on? Four years is a long time and if you are truly serious, sacrifices need to be made. It's not fair to hold you back professionally and personally when he has said he would consider moving. You can keep the relationship going with open communication, trips, emails, little surprises...any and everything. But I will not lie to you. It takes work and things will not be easy. Tell him to pack his raggedy duffle bag and relocate before he loses the best thing that ever happened to him! (Just joking, don't scare the man off) Hope this helps and feel free to follow up.
